It took almost a month to crystallize where I stand and how I want my style to evolve in 2024. While I call them resolutions, nothing is strict about them - "intentions" is probably a better word. Anyway, let's dive in.
No Black
Since my teenage years, black was the "universal" color that would "go" with everything. As a result, I had way too many clothes that are black and still revert to black by default. However, I feel much better dressed in lighter colors or in colors other than black. As a result, I've decided to avoid purchasing and minimize using black clothes for some time and actively try to dress in different colors - or at least be conscious when I put a black outfit on, that black is there for a reason and not as default.
More Color
I recently created my style moodboard, and every single piece has an accent of color. Yet, in my daily life, I mostly revert to the tried and tested combinations that are fairly neutral. I will try to use more color in my daily life, and my sale purchases as well as summer shoes are reflecting that. There is definitely more work and thinking involved than just switching different neutral combinations, but I hope it will be rewarding and worth it.
More No-Buys & Wearing My Wardrobe Out
I have way too many clothes already. With changes in lifestyle, constant changes in weight, and an overall fashion addiction, I've accumulated quite a collection. Nothing brings out my creativity better than a proper no-buy - I start thinking about how to mend, change, play with my current wardrobe to figure out new and interesting combinations. I am now preparing to do a few months of no-buy and see what pieces I feel I am missing the most. Fingers crossed that my resolve stays strong.
Use More Jewelry
My go-to jewelry is very simple - a gold necklace and a simple pair of earrings, and I feel I am underusing it as a tool. This year I want to explore using more jewelry, especially bracelets and necklaces, to elevate the whole look. I am also quite intrigued by brooches (recently covered by
) - I believe they will be everywhere the coming year. I also want to audit my jewelry and try to wear it more often, even though I believe there are some gaps, especially in the necklace area.Figure Out What Works for My Body and Lifestyle
I went from dressing solely in a way that works for my body, to dressing without any regard for my body shape, to now coming back and thinking about what really works for me. Despite the big pants trend that has been taking over the fashion industry for the past years, I often feel much better in straight and tapered silhouettes - big pants require a tight top and waist, and I do not want to deal with bloating ruining the outfit, as well as have my pants dragging in the snow in winter. On the contrary, very short pants do not look too good on me unless I am in heels (and I am never in heels these days) and I do not want to have to deal with very special shoes in winter. I am at the stage in life where if I wear grandma's or formal clothes, I feel (and I guess look) very conservative. Oversized cardigans, big shoes, oversized blazers require so much effort to work on my body type that I am not sure it is worth it - in fact, I sold my Tibi Liam last year and do not own any Liam at the moment. So, it's been nice to experiment, but I now prefer to focus on what fits best - I believe it will be easier on my style and my wallet.
Take My Style to the Next Level
Finally, I've learned so much in this style journey mostly from Amy Smilovic and Tibi Style Classes, but also from Instagram and the whole Tibi fans community, and I feel that I went from an absolute beginner to somewhat intermediate. And yet I gasp in awe when I see how advanced fashionistas construct their outfits. I just spent 20 mins looking at
by Irene - every single outfit has that extra touch, via proportions, textures, colors, or a well-placed accessory like a sock, even if the outfits are comprised fully of neutrals. My goal for 2024 is to actually analyze it, explore this deeper, and use the learnings to build my outfits. As usual, the road from beginner to intermediate is much shorter than from intermediate to advanced, but I will look at my inspiration and try to learn as much as possible during this year.Do you have any style plans this year? Let me know in the comments!
I love this and the idea of writing out your style resolutions for the year! I’m doing rule of 5 this year and limiting myself to only buying five new clothing items in an effort to get creative with the pieces I already have 🩷 think no buys are great for that!
Thank you for including me in your 2024 resolutions newsletter! I’m glad I’ve been able to give you some inspo!!
I’ve been thinking about this for a couple of months, but I’ve realized I haven’t bought much recently nor do I feel the need to buy anything specific and I think that’s because I (like many others) did a post covid refresh and I feel like I’m a good place with my wardrobe. Famous last words 🥸. So, I think I’ll just focus on refining and tightening my style, with a dash of experimentation when the inspiration strikes!
